Bratmobile
Ladies, Women and Girls
It may not have the initial impact as their debut recording- a nail-scratching-chalkboard mewl that begat the whole grrl era. But there's enough piss 'n' moan during the execution of Bratmobile's new reunion disc (driven by Tim Green's punchy production) that nearly vanquishes those early, amateurish efforts. While drummer Molly Neuman's primal backbeat tickles your ribs, Erin Smith's surfish guitar licks are amended with a sharp, piercing flange to corroborate Allison Wolfe's manic harangues on love, sweet love. Although it’s been enticing to see how they fared in their new projects of The Peechees and Cold Cold Hearts, the old chemistry still seems to be there. Especially when they rev the motors for “Flavor of the Month Club,” “Girlfriends Don’t Keep,” and the rudimentary “Gimme Brains.” Sharp, bitchy, kitschy, and glad to have them back, if only temporarily. –gloria collins (Lookout!
