Shawn Mullins
Beneath The Velvet Sun
Like the urban undertow of Eagle Eye Cherry and the sardonic, low-key wit of Everlast, there's a lot more to Shawn Mullins' songs than just his droopy FM hit "Lullaby." Blessed with a healthy rasp- a tantalizing world-weary voice for such a young yip- Mullins is also an enterprising new-breed songwriter, drawn to the rapid-fire properties of rap, but with a verbal assuredness of old school folkies, most notably Springsteen. "She gets high, she gets low, she lives her life straight just like Serpico, she starts to sneeze and announces 'bless me,' and wipes her nose on the shirt that says 'Kill Whitey'." Delivered with a guzzled growl and an eclectic backing band that makes epics from scraps, Mullins is a sincere poet that still holds promise. I just hope he wouldn't waste half of his next disc on attempts to recreate and recondition "Lullaby"'s lustre. -peter moore (Columbia)
