Plastic Volume 4 Electronic Compilation
The first couple of installments in Nettwerk's Plastic series were responsible for issuing tracks that helped define the state-of-the-art among remixers. While delighting and disfiguring works by Meat Beat Manifesto, The Chemical Brothers, Garbage, and The Crystal Method (all on the first volume alone), it was a mutual relationship of musical edge with commercial high profile. Volume 4 captures the current scene- no less edgier, but partially painting itself into a corner. While the submissions here from BT, Chem Bros, and Azzido Da Bass percolate with hyper-bpms, snatching cryptic vocal samples with interwoven loops, virtually all are flat and indistinguishable from each another in their one-world raveness. Even Moby's spectral "Porcelain," tho' moody 'n' minor-keyed, sounds like a lesser effort with all the digital goop distracting from the epic, ascending chord sequence and tribal samplings. Worth the price: Scanty Sandwich's "Because Of You," that lifts a couple quotes from an early Michael Jackson track, the pre-voice change "Shoo Be Doo Da Day," for a extraordinary blend of teen pop, chunky techno, and acid scorch. With cuts from Sasha and Emerson, Trisco, Brother Brown, Art of Trance (another remix of the blissful "Breathe"), and Paul Van Dyk. -gloria collins (Nettwerk America)
