The Beauvilles
Virginity
3-song CD
Recorded @ Camp Hiawatha Studios, Seminole Heights
Engineered by Steve Seachrist
This trio’s trio of tracks showcases their clean, eclectic pop style with verve and confidence. Recorded live, these three tracks present ample evidence that The Beauvilles are equipped to handle just about any musical situation, excluding, you know, anything heavy. The B’villes’ sound is a little bit jazzy, a little bit granola-fied, and a whole lot of strong writing and ambition. Luckily, the threesome pulls it off, clever and capable without ever becoming overbearingly smug. ‘Let On’, ‘Virginity’, and ‘Tangerines’ all tread the same sonic water, deftly wandering among strong hooks with plucky, distortion-free guitar, prehensile bass and rock-steady drumming, cruising around enough to lend everything a semi-lounged-out feel and always hitting back on the dynamic with strength and timing. Solid instrumental performances, great vocals, and an individual flair set ‘em apart. They’ve got that vibe that will keep the three-chord die-hards muttering about how much they suck, while they’re whisking the die-hards’ girlfriends away. The only thing here I’ve got to bitch about is the fact that maybe, just maybe, ‘Virginity’ goes on a bit too long, so they could get that snatch of after-party ambiance in there.
