It was only a split instant, but I immediately recognized Sade Abu’s voice on the radio yesterday, the icy temptress softly breathing the words to “By Your Side” into my ear. The gradual groove, that jazzy coastal wave cool, with a few new trip hop sensations- has it really been eight years since she last recorded? While inviting producer Mike Pella back for a return engagement was the most obvious move, Sade has witnessed her oeuvre of sophisticated detachment assumed by electro-artisans like Portishead and Savage Garden. Borrowing a few of their discarded loops and digital delays, Sade returns to form for her latest, 11 cuts of balmy, free-flowing daydreams, driven by a laidback backing brigade that never shifts out of first. Sure tunes like “The Sweetest Gift” and “All About Our Love” are completely interchangeable with past efforts, but who would want to hear otherwise? –gloria collins (Epic)
