The Black Foundation: In Dub
While he’s usually not cited as quickly as Lord Coxsone or King Tubby, Lawrence “Jack Ruby” Lindo will always be remembered for his production of Burning Spear’s “Marcus Garvey.” It’s a track so extraordinary and noble that it single-handedly defined reggae’s political and spiritual powers. Over time, Ruby recorded most of the island’s rootsier brethren, including many socially conscious tracks with Big Youth, The Heptones, and the legendary Black Disciples. Before his death in 1989, Ruby had worked with everyone from Delroy Washington to the Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards, adding his distinctive, plaintive horn lines and moody bass patterns to the master reels. Black Foundation collects a number of Ruby’s definitive works (including Spear’s “Garvey”), as well as nine heretofore unreleased tracks, in a compilation revealing Ruby’s gracious, sensitive touch. In personal tribute to their friend and colleague, King Tubby and Erroll Thompson dub an hour’s worth of Ruby plates into a non-stop sound collage, mixing premiere Spear atmospherics with the flavors of Justin Hinds and the Dominoes. Both are highly recommended. –peter moore (Heart Beat, One Camp Street, Cambridge, MA 02140)
