Strait Up

Strait Up
Snot were appropriately fit for their early second stage slot at the ’98 Ozzfest. Major label disc just in the stores, pumped notices from the underground press. A favorable, upward trajectory for the California band. But when Snot vocalist Lynn Strait was killed in an auto accident later that year, it silenced the potential of a charismatic frontman. And a gifted friend who relied on his band’s musical aggression to feed his own unique lyrical wisdom. You can’t judge a book by its cover, but you can honor a man with his friends. And Strait had many. Over the summer they gathered to celebrate Strait (ala Temple Of The Dog) with this disc- the virtual vocal cream of the sonic heavies, recording a set of original tunes with the balance of Snot. Most of the guest singers offer personal reflections first (like the powerful “Starlit Eyes” written by Serj Tankian of System Of A Down or the poignant urgency of “Catch A Spirit” by Max Cavalera of Soulfly), but the potential for one-upmanship is absent, revealing an honor and respect that’s rarely displayed in the heat of battle. Features tracks from Korn’s Jonathan Davis, Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst, Incubus’ Brandon Boyd, and Sevendust’s Lajon Witherspoon among others. –peter moore (Immortal/Virgin)
