Selby Tigers

Selby Tigers
Charm City

At one point, I had to wade deep into the dark chasms of my garage to retrieve a decaying stack of treasured Trouser Press magazines (Brinsley Schwarz on the cover, whew…). Y’see, the new disc by these dedicated wavers is so full of perky, kitschy kool that I wanted to remind myself why I began listening to music in the first place. Not only did I relish the boy/girl vocal tandems of The B-52’s, but the blind abandon and nerve-y intuition of groups like The Slits and The Rezillos were a necessary re-adjustment for the time. By forbidding music from taking itself so seriously and corporate-oriented, there was new breath yet. Now, everytime I gaze at the cash cow at TRL or ponder the fate of some Korn klone in these pages, I’ve been reaching for this delightful album. It’s one of the freshest bursts of verve (“Cutting School”- “In third grade class, we bury the hatchet in your ass”), with a rare unstoppable energy (12 tracks in 28 minutes) that I wanted to ring up Pam and John’s show on ‘MNF or immediately hustle down to the Buffalo Roadhouse. And tho’ I’d never condone living in the past, this is where it all began for me. I would hope this could be somebody else’s introduction. –gloria collins (Hopeless Records, P.O.
