Einstein main man Jason Allen knows how to write a good, solid pop tune, and his band’s sound, sort of a combination of Old Wave reverence and Athens-bred art-rock jangle, is a fresh and engaging one. All six of these tunes inject new personality into some old-standby hooks and chord progressions, largely due to Allen’s liquid, throaty tenor and some jazzy/jammy inflections by bassist Brian Mackay and drummer Matt Brady. The earnestness of ‘Empty Parking Lot’, Eighties dance-floor atmospherics of ‘What To Say’, and catchy riffage of ‘Square One’ cause them to stand out, but nothing here misses by much, and the always-clean versus always-dirty guitar tracks serve to draw the listener in. There are some less-than-stellar elements – the phrasing and performances are occasionally less than sure of themselves, Allen’s lyrics could stand a little growth, and Nick Frisco, obviously a good guitarist, might consider a bit of restraint in the soloing department – but the material and the talent are there. Einstein are just a bit of fine-tuning away from some seriously great tuneage. Definitely worth looking into, and keeping an eye on.
