Cricket

Cricket
"Humble Pie"
(12-track CD, recorded at Middlesex and Exocel Studios, St. Pete, produced by Douglas Jacobs and Cricket, Cricket (vocals, guitars, keyboards, percussion), Douglas Jacobs (guitars, bass, percussion), Dave Jerow (drums), Tim Smith (bass), and others, 47:26)

This transplanted Petersburger (now living in St. Pete) sent us a thoughtful "thinking of you" submission. A neat effort, as it turns out, that binds between musical extremes. Someone said she used to be shy. I wouldn’t believe it from the kickoff "Love Knot," a powerful opener that rages with a super-heavy crunch and a bitchy exterior, like most L7/Hole missives. Since turnabout appears to be Cricket’s strong suit, the mood turns insightful, off-centered and vulnerable for the Liz Phair-like for "Superman" (written from Lois Lane's lovestruck perspective), a fragile tune that sounds like the mirror opposite of the first. It’s an enterprising display of contrasts, since remaining tracks sorta bounce between the two, allowing Cricket to teasing with her shy demeanor before ripping off the mask for a blowtorch finale. My best to the marketing department, who should immediately seize upon the humdrum strums of “Good Wife,” a charming, Sarah McLachlan-styled ballad that puts a cynical spin on married life with a super-clever chorus. Tell Cricket we said hello.
