The Mystic Krewe of Clearlight
The Mystic Krewe of Clearlight
Without rehashing the whole seedy spectrum of the stoner rock realm (seedy! rehash! geddit? aha!), a lot of those Blue Cheer-attributed soporific jams were just that- an initial burst of Marshall wattage that slowly blossomed with decorative, colorful soloing before the repetitive nods set in. Then back to bong, yehah! It's only a guess that the toke quotient is relatively elevated at the Mystic Krewe barn. These New Orleans-based thrashers (featuring castoffs of Eyehategod, Crowbar, and Down) take a few loopy intensity cues from British festival bands like Ozric Tentacles and Porcupine Tree, as well as ample dosage of Deep Purple's organ-centric jams into their fierce attack. Driven by Ross Karpelman's swirling Hammond, guitarists Jimmy Bower and Paul Webb whip on some impressive dueling riffage for the event, colliding then combining in a kaleidoscopic somersault (wow!) of psych-laden sounds. –cip edwards (Tee Pee Records)
