New Beats From The Delta
I'm not sure that I'm completely won over by the broad concept here (Fat Possum's roster of modern-day bluesmen sampled by upstart trip/hip hoppers), but I'll admit to enjoying a few headstrong DJs given the historical challenge. While most of the St. Pete-based remixers (Go Gittas, Big Oomp, Shrive Alive) choose the obvious method- culling the mournful moans and soulful shouts from the back catalogs of Junior Kimbrough, T-Model Ford, and Aise Payton- they bust a few plain verses as if out of necessity instead of creativity. Funny how a track like Cedell Davis' "Baby, I Love You So" contains more power and warmth because Shrive Alive's sample is left mostly intact. Is there a lesson there? I don't know, but given the choice between Kimbrough's forlorn intensity juxtaposed by Coldwatah's deadpan, filth-riddled boasts (as on "Stay All Night"), I'd believe Junior if he said if the sky was crying. Yet, I'm still drawn to the exotci mixture. –virginia reed (Fat Possum Records)
