The Tubes

The Tubes
Tubes World Tour 2001
One of my lasting impressions of The Tubes was their guest shot on the lost-lamented SCTV (a whacked-out show that rarely featured outsider cameos), where the band went fly fishing with comedian John Candy. I'm guessing it was penance for lip-synching "Talk To Ya Later" in a rustic, log cabin setting, but head Tube Fee Waybill traded quips and tips with Candy like he was born for the part. Over the top, wholly unbelievable, but with globs of class, just as the band has always operated. Hoping to cop a few of the new millenium's quirks, The Tubes return with a new pair of studio tracks sprinkled between a reunion concert (recorded last January). Both techno-centric jabs, "Digi-Doll" ("a high-tech hottie") and "Loveline" ("I caught your number on the personal page") are typically Tubesian: glossy, Broadway-bound productions, madcap lyrics, and twist of power metal for the geriatric glams. The concert recordings, of course, are flawless, recreating faves like "White Punks On Dope," "She's A Beauty," and "Mondo Bondage." –gloria collins (CMC International/BMG)
