Guy Forsyth
Steak
We'd probably spill less ink merely mentioning the few folks Austin blues rocker Guy Forsyth hasn't already rubbed elbows. Since his mid-‘90s Warners’ debut, Guy's sizzlin’ slidework and blowtorch harp has graced dozens of albums (including sessions with Pops Bayless and Rod Piazza), while oft-victorious in his Texas roadhouse conquest with his own Asylum Street Spankers. Like its protein-heavy title, Steak is a well-done solo shot on the grill, featuring Forsyth's penchant for outsider opportunities (like the Tom Waits-inspired boho blues "Thibodaux Furlough," complete with milk bottle percussion and musical saw) and brewskied, blue-collar boogies (a no-regrets, Pretty Things-tinged "Mona" leads off the album). But with lots of churnin’ and wailin’ riffage to keep the crowds howlin’ for an extra verse. With just the right flair for historical acknowledgment, flashy soloing, manic party energy, and compasionate, soulful inflections, Forsyth has become the rockers’ point man and the purists’ torch bearer. –peter moore (Antone’s Records, P.O.
