Voices Of The Real World
Over the last decade, Peter Gabriel's Real World imprint has exposed many vast treasures of music spread afar on this 3rd rock (quite cosmic, if you consider some of the pan-cultural collaborations produced by the label). Yet, among all the exotic instruments and rhythmic permutations, the most moving sound is still the simple human voice, as Gabriel notes, "We use the voice to express much of who we are and what we feel." This collection is a study of those expressions, from the throat-singing Tuvas and angelic Bulgurian choirs, to spiritual gospel groups and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's scat-ish ragas, brought together in tribute to Khan's recent passing. Strange, serene, soothing, heartbreaking, and laughable, the sounds are complex and contradictory as befitting the human condition. Excellent. -virginia reed (Real World)
