The Churchills
You Are Here
Pop hopefuls, part 218: If you've had the pleasure of stumbling across The Churchills' "Beautiful (Coulda Woulda)" pouring its quicksilver charm from the FM (or as background on Spin City), you know instinctively that it's one helluva pop gem. This bittersweet power ballad boasts harmonic near-perfection with three honey-coated voices (2 guys, 1 gal) and a slow, simmering, six-string chime that lingers on after the ring is gone. A winsome foursome who've managed to snag Crowded House's Mark Hart to provide the lush, fat budget production for their debut, NY's Churchills honor ther idols wisely, having been nurtured on 2nd generation sophisto-poppers like Split Enz and Jellyfish. Although it's a lot softer than your typ-Weezer crust (Hart puts the emphasis on tight vocal interplay), half the fun is picking up on the Beach Boys, Raspberries, and Hooter quotes that get sprinkled throughout. A minor classic. -gloria collins (Abrupt/Universal)
