Mocean Worker
Aural & Hearty
The club soundz issued by Adam Dorn (dba as Mocean Worker) literally soar into a post-techno spectrum, moving his d'n'b-derived beats into a jazzier realm. Like his sampling from obscure Gabor Szabo masters, Dorn uses the Brazilian guitarist's work to launch into a tropicalia-meets-dancezone track ("Tres Tres Chic"), full of trilling flutes, kitschy keyboards, and Ipanema rhythms. Inspirational and infectious, Dorn mixes for a quick connection, as well as broadening the scope of dancefloor-related musics. As the son of noted Atlantic label producer Joel Dorn, Adam has been exposed to a sweeping range of influences, while helping his dad with the family-run 32 Jazz reissue label, and working as a session bassist for Chaka Khan, David Sanborn, and Hal Willner. A sharp mixer with restrained taste and shrewd insight, his third album is a seamless flow of insistant beats, bizarre samples (like U2's Bono howling for "Air Suspension" here), and electronic mayhem that proves that a little gray matter is the best fashion. -gloria collins (Palm Pictures/Ryko, 4 Columbus Circle, 5th Floor, New York, NY 10019)
