Orphanage
Inside
Maybe it would be less complicated to describe what isn’t included during the final execution of Inside: there’s no Cat Stevens covers and there’s no banjos within. However, just about every other device is fair game from this Dutch six-piece. They’ve managed to coat their abrasive, deathly tempest with ethereal keyboard treatments and serene, Celtic-like vocals, all tightly wound in seamless classico-prog arrangements. Orphanage master this peculiar mayhem by continually shifting their doomy metal assault from George Oosthoek’s bellygrowls to the spiritual cleansing of Rosan Van Der Aa’s virtuous chanting, while the band blast away at a conflicting musical tension that burrows between Entombed’s rootsy slaughter and Therion’s orchestral, over-the-top bombast. Much like Carl Orff’s symphonic spectacles, you won’t find the ecstasy and elation of a track, like “Behold” here, in any other six-minute timeframe until they cram the entire Rush and Queensryche catalogs into a single mega-mix. Astonishing. –chip edwards (Nuclear Blast)
