Has anyone else noticed that Toyota nicked Hot Water Music’s fire glyph logo for their new Summer Savings Sellathon, or whatever the hell it is? Weird…Brainiac’s Daughter are not, repeat, not playing this weekend’s CocoFest 2000 Battle of the Bands in Orlando, despite the circulation of assorted emails to the contrary. Kjo is headed off to Wisconsin to visit the family while Chris and the boys finish production work on their latest batch of recorded tunes, so don’t expect any live action from ‘em until summer’s end. They do have their new web address, so before long you’ll be able to get the true BD scoopage directly at www.brainiacsdaughter.net …weighty-matters website Metal Masters’ CD review page is currently featuring the latest breakthrough in criticism – artists reviewing artists! Let’s see, there’s Nicko McBrain reviewing Iron Maiden, Bruce Kulick reviewing KISS and Union, John Corabi reviewing Motley Crue and The Scream, John Christ from Danzig and John Christ reviewing Danzig and John Christ. Wait a second here, I’m beginning to detect some subtle patternage. Any bets on who’s going to turn in the first negative review? www.MetalMasters.net …rookie enigmas Hank Madison will be at Clearwater’s Gasoline Alley on July 11. More on this outfit as soon as we fish their press kit from behind Dave’s desk…aahhh, The Beauvilles. Able to leap categorization in a single bound. Tony loves ‘em, so there you go. What more do you need? Well, then, how about the fact that they’re gonna play at everybody’s favorite St. Pete home away from home/dive, Mastry’s, tonight, July 7? They’ll also be at Club More (July 8, w/Pagan Saints and Hangtown), The Pharm (July 12, w/Cold Mountain Band), The Atomic Age Café (July 14), and New World (July 23, w/Greed Engine) over the course of the next few weeks...
…guitarist Bobby DeVito, whose capo I had every intention of returning until I began to screw around with it (quickly growing addicted), has headed on up to Saint Augustine for the summer. He’ll spend the next few months hanging out at some really cool studio on the East Coast, recording and commuting back here for his solo gigs at Ybor’s James Joyce Pub (July 6, 14, 15, 20, 28, 29, August 3, 11, 12, 25, 26) and Dave’s (July 13, 27, August 10, 24)… “creamy yet menacing/fruity yet grim/pure yet somehow/spoiled”. Not exactly sure what Zappaphiles Bogus Pomp are getting at, but we do know that they’ll be at Skipper’s Smokehouse (Bearss and Skipper, North Tampa) on Friday, July 14 to drop many jaws. “Electric fiddle virtuoso” Dan Campbell, whose St. Pete-based outfit The Iratowns will open, is scheduled to join the band for their set. The show starts early, around seven, and tix are ten bucks at the door. BP will also appear at Mahaffey Theater on August 5, with Napoleon Murphy Brock and skewed, soulful, cult-legend vocal masters The Persuasions, who plan on performing an all-Zappa program for the first time since filming their ‘Zappa’s Universe’ concerts in 1991. www.bogusp.com …Book of Shadows return to Gainesville’s Florida Theater this Friday; the band’s been gigging fairly heavily up there of late, and have been featured on Rock 104. BOS will be back in town for a Brass Mug show with Virelai and Methuselah’s Trip (fear not, Joel, for I am gifted with both SpellCheck and Bible knowledge) the following evening, Saturday, July 8, before pulling double duty the following weekend with an opening slot for Halcyon at Skipper’s and a later slot at Orpheum on July 15. New tuneage is available at their website via streaming audio. www.book-of-shadows.com …Dawgmatix asked us to send out some love to George Harris. What is this, a freakin’ dating service?

At press time, the band was still a go for their support slot on the upcoming Causey Way show at Club More…
...Goodbye, Slacker Conspiracy; hello, Four Man Militia (or 4MM, to be brief and very cool about it). The band changed its name in accordance with a recent lineup shift, and debuted both the new moniker and member at Merritt Island’s Ground Zero this past weekend. 4MM will be back at ye olde Mug on July 22…speaking of Le Mug Brass, comely Heather and the gang will host Magnetic Trigger and the heavily-buzzed pilots vs aeroplanes on July 16. PVA, you need to bring some shirts down to DaddyKool.com pretty soon, the kids are getting antsy. Magnetic Trigger will also be at Mother’s Milk (Clearwater) on July 22 with Chumley’s Toy, and provided the best blurb quote we’ve seen in a long time: “we are too poor to buy an add this time. Maybe next month”. www.magnetictrigger.com …Sage are busy mixing their new disc and counting their guitar players, which has been known to take upwards of three weeks. Plus, Dave Sage just got back from vacation, so don’t expect to see them providing volume and hook in a live setting for a bit…Congratulations to Mr Bella for snagging a slot at this year’s Atlantis Music Conference. Not all the other info is in, but rumor insists that Pasco’s Harry Dash will also be making the trip, along with one or two others…
...this month’s Writer’s Night, hosted by Fran Snyder and benefiting The Joshua House, as always, will feature Scotty Clarke, Bob Thompson, Anna O, Fran Snyder, and John Wesley. July 18, Orpheum, eight until midnight, three bucks before the music starts, five bucks after. www.fransnyder.com …Barely Pink’s Brian Merrill, former Hourglass Garden guitarist Andy Feldman, and Pulling Birds drummer Kevin Connolly recently got together at Adelaide Loop Studios and, with the help of Adelaide engineers/musicians Terry and Tommy Platt, recorded some material for The New Sell Out, “a Who tribute CD based on their classic The Who Sell Out”. The disc will include both interpretations of material from the Who’s record and newly-written jingles and ads in the record’s style – Brian, Andy and Kevin, for instance, recorded both The Who’s ‘Premier Drum Jingle’ and their own satire, ‘Radio None’ – and features performances by such notables as Tommy Keene, The Smithereens’ Jim Babjak, and Young Fresh Fellows, to name but a few… Dunedin’s The Pharm will be closed Sundays and Mondays throughout the summer, but will continue to bring you their trademark variety of original music just the same, including upcoming giggage by The Glen Mancini Band (July 7), Beanstalk and The Harvest Band (July 8), the aforementioned Cold Mountain show on the 12th, and Grin (July 14). www.pharmreport.com …
...future-pop visionary, or just a polite guy who loves cheap keyboard noises? It really doesn’t matter; Gerald Hammill has been playing his own music in one form or another for as long as I’ve been going to see bands around here, and he will be sorely missed when he heads off to NYC next week. Spacious International will continue to evolve in the wake of Gerald’s departure, but aestheticized main man Jack Spatafora’s wonderful July 7 bill at Orpheum, which also features Gainesville indie guys Argentina and our own melodic Maccabees, will be Mister Hammill’s final Bay area performance. We wish him well. Other upcoming aestheticized shows include a July 20 New World lineup with The Murder City Devils, The Yo-Yo’s and The Catheters, and the one that’s got everybody cleaning off the non-prescription clear lenses of their blocky black glasses, Rainer Maria, Mike Kinsella and ’65 Filmshow, at Orpheum on August 1… In other Orpheum news, Raunch N’ Roll’s shift to Tuesdays has left Thursdays open for their latest theme-style DJ-action experiment, Britpop Night. Dance, mope, cop The Beatles, whatever, if it’s English and hooky, chances are you’ll hear it. Last week’s kickoff drew quite a crowd of Anglophiles, a few of whom looked nothing like either Morissey or Robert Smith (though there were quite a few Gallagher Brothers-style mod shags about). As far as live shows are concerned, here’s some of the stuff we haven’t covered thus far:
July 8 – The Groovewell Series; Vijay Ghate, Bradley Morewood, Tribal Style
July 11 – Hot Rod Circuit, Pseudo Heroes, Closure
July 12, 19, 26 – Meadowlark
July 20 – Savak, Zymosiz
July 21 – Amanda Green, The Starts, The Unrequited Loves
July 22 – G-Spot III w/The Gito, Gringo Diablo, Guyana Hotshots, others
July 29 – Flood, others
July 30 – The Stereo, Midtown, Midhaven
Something for everyone, provided you’ve been radio-weaned. Call for times and ticket prices, or check out the website. www.statemedia.com … This is shaping up to be the Localized of the Living Gainesville Bands. The Pawn Rook Four are ready to tour again, having worked in new bassist Dan Smith and spent the last couple of months recharging. They’ll be down our way for a July 15 show at The Neptune Lounge (Tarpon Springs), unless they go and do something crazy like cancel the show. In addition, the band is looking to drum up some support in various cities statewide by recruiting street teams. If you would like to be a part of their Tampa squad, and, really, who wouldn’t, contact Amber at bleukarma@aol.com … Ramona Ramonster have taken the summer off from playing out, in order to focus on promoting their new disc, Impervious Nature. Guitarist Surely T recently returned from some LA sessions with Matt Mahaffey of Self, who played on four tracks slated to appear on Surely’s upcoming solo release (under the name Wes Styles). The RR disc has apparently fallen into the hands of various Industry Insider types…oh, what hath Cotton and Taffy wrought? Downtown St. Pete’s The Emerald has been moving steadily into vogue as the favorite new intimate (read: small) live venue among Pinellas outfits; Gunburner, Grin, Resin, and Spacious International are but a few of the bands who’ve been seen rocking the alcove on weekend nights. Fornikulture and Moss Feaster are slated to perform on July 29, bringing a heavier element into play. Not to slight these bands at all, but is The Emerald ready for such weighty fare? Only time, nine or ten old rummies, and the cops will tell. Fornikulture now has limited edition T-shirts available exclusively from their website. http://web.tampabay.rr.com/fornikulture …
...On May 27, finalists Crusade, 28 Gates, Cult 45 and Mind descended upon Big Fat Studio’s Showcase Club to vie for the title of, uh, winner of the studio’s Grand Opening Recording Contest. St. Pete’s 28 Gates took top honors, winning an all-expenses-paid 4-song CD with all the trimmings, a full-produced video, and professional photo shoot. Big Fat is always on the lookout for bands to record or put on their showcase club stage, and are expanding their website services to offer all sorts of goodies. Get in touch. www.BigFatMusic.com … ...Blues warriors Underdogs recently licensed their song ‘Florida Bound’ to ESPN for use during NASCAR race footage; the tune was recently heard during a truck race in which a terrible, explosion-causing-type accident occurred. The band has also signed a European distribution deal, following their trek through Spain last year. The U-dogs are currently writing and demoing material for their next CD release; look for a winter release. www.underdogblues.com … The Refuge has finally scored another Command Central. They recently signed a lease on some office space in downtown St. Pete (behind the Florida International Museum, across from Williams Park). While the guys are considering renting the space next door as well, and tearing down the wall between to create a small venue, for the time being, shows will continue to be farmed out to various spaces. At least they’ve got an address, right? (though they neglected to inform us exactly what it was). The location will be used as offices, meeting space, counseling, and packaged distribution (meal service is still on hold). Skaught and the crew want to thank everybody for their support, donations, and sweat. www.skaught.com … anybody who’s wandered into the Focus/State Theatre offices over the last couple of months or so will have noticed this big black rack of sci-fi-looking shit just waiting to come alive. The owners of The State have hooked up with Digital Club Network, a company that ostensibly outfits live venues with the equipment to broadcast concerts in real-time over the web. Well, DCN is kicking off its biggest promotion/show series ever the weekend of July 22-25, and will be broadcasting gigs from more than thirty clubs nationwide. Over one hundred bands, including Blink-182, WU-Tang Clan, Ben Folds Five, Wilco, Yo La Tengo, Mos Def, Superchunk, Kittie, Steve Earle, Patti Smith, Throwing Muses, X, will be piped through DCN’s vitual festival site – designed just for the occasion, fully loaded with different stages, food pavilions, beer tents, everything but Port-O-Lets – for an internet-based monster concert experience. And it’s all FREE, FREE, FREE. Make sure you log onto the website to browse before the 22nd, as DCN will be holding contests and awarding tickets to the actual shows, so you could really be there, as opposed to at home glued to your monitor like the consummate techno-shut-in. Will the Union Underground and Guttermouth shows at the State that weekend be broadcast? You’ll have to go to know. www.digitalclubnetwork.com
Ask, Ponder, Fret. Apparently, changing their name and throwing a bunch of covers into their set couldn’t keep The Rancid Polecats’ short-lived affiliation with sports bar The Penalty Box alive. “Too metal,” said management. Shit, I could’ve told ‘em that. Still, it would have been a joy to behold. So who’s gonna try and fill Woody’s shoes? Have Mr Bella decided to remain a quartet? Will The Spills debut their new bassist for the second half of their July 7 set?
